Hiking the Lost City Trail in Peru: A Guide for Adventurers

Perched high above the Amazonian rainforest, the Lost City Trail is an unforgettable trekking experience through the majestic Peruvian Andes. This 5-day journey takes you deep into the cloud forest, where the remnants of a long-lost civilization will leave you in awe.

Preparing for the Trek

Before embarking on this adventure, it's essential to acclimatize to the high altitude. Lares, the starting point of the trek, is situated at an elevation of 3,200 meters (10,500 feet). Take a few days to explore the town and its surroundings before beginning your hike.

For this challenging trek, you'll need sturdy hiking boots, comfortable clothing, and a reliable backpack. Bring layers for unpredictable Andean weather, including rain gear and a warm hat. Don't forget to pack essentials like water purification tablets or a water filter, as well as a first-aid kit.

The Trail

The Lost City Trail begins in Lares, where you'll meet your guide and local porters who will accompany you throughout the trek. As you ascend through lush cloud forest, keep an eye out for exotic bird species like the Andean cock-of-the-rock.

Over the next few days, you'll cross multiple rivers, climb steep mountain passes, and descend into valleys carved by ancient rivers. Each night, your campsite will offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

The Lost City

On the fourth day, you'll reach the Lost City, a stunning archaeological site hidden deep within the cloud forest. This ancient settlement is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Inca civilization.

Explore the ruins at leisure, taking in the intricate stonework and impressive architecture. Keep an eye out for artifacts like ceramics, textiles, and stone tools, which offer glimpses into the lives of the people who once inhabited this site.

Returning to Lares

After spending a morning exploring the Lost City, begin your descent back to Lares. This final day is a challenging but rewarding trek through stunning scenery, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Upon returning to Lares, celebrate your achievement with local cuisine and drinks, like coca tea or chicha (corn beer). Take time to rest and recover from the trek, as well as explore this charming Andean town.
